What can we do as leaders to celebrate pride? Culture is created not just through words, but through actions. It’s what we as leaders and what our companies say, but also what we show, tolerate and allow. We can be supportive, accepting, and inclusive and foster that environment. Not everyone is comfortable or grew up in an accepting environment. Employees are more engaged when they feel that they can openly share who they are. I have been reluctant to make a post, but over the past few years I have had multiple people at different levels within the organization come up to me and just share their own stories about seeing a leader at work who is gay. I have also had employees come up to me whose children are LGBT and say how they just haven’t known someone in a professional environment and it’s opened their eyes.

Some companies have chosen to show their support for the LGBT community by changing logos to reflect a rainbow. I want to reflect on how I celebrate pride – 6 years ago in June, I got married to my husband. 5 years ago in June – we celebrated the birth of our son. What people may not realize is that 10 years ago marriage was not legal where I live and creating a family for me was a dream. Today I celebrate pride with my 3 children and my husband and am excited to watch as history has changed in my own life.Ĭompanies have a social responsibility (the S in ESG). Many of us work in global environments where there are the LGBT community cannot express who they are, marriage is legal, and in some cases criminal. A bit of solidarity from leaders and inclusivity goes a long way.
